The Reign of our Rose – August 2011

Posted By on August 30, 2011

Mary Ann Harper, El Dorado Rose – 2011, has agreed to share her reign with our Center. Each month, Mary Ann will offer us a look at what is happening as a result of her special status.

Tuesday, August 2 – Judy, Sandy and I attended the National Neighborhood Night Out held at Pinewood School in Pollock Pines. All local emergency agencies were represented;- USFS, Cal Fire, Pollock Pines Fire Dept., EDC Sheriff, John D’Agostini and several deputies. Rep. from Tom McClintock’s office – Mr. Ross read a proclamation declaring Pollock Pines Neighborhood Night Out has officially been submitted into the National competition (?) Another proclamation was read by executive director of Community Economic Development Association of Pollock Pines, Jeanne Harper on behalf of Supervisor Ray Nutting, who was still in board meeting but did arrive later.
The Roses were then asked to speak on behalf of our program. After the crowd gleefully tossed rose petals at our feet, the new PPSD Superintenent and 2 new principals were introduced. We had another grand time sashaying around the school grounds.

Saturday, August 6th – Betty January, El Dorado Rose 2007, announced an historic event taking place today in Latrobe. For the first time since 1957, passengers would be arriving by rail and disembarking where the old Latrobe R.R. Station once stood. The FEDSHRA invited the Ladies of the El Dorado Roses to greet the passengers as they stepped down from the Skagit. Shade, water and the following Roses were there.

  • Carole Sandy
  • Vivian Normadene
  • Kathy Mah
  • Mary Kay Official Escort Bob
  • Vivian, Kathy and Sandy rode the Skagit back to the Hampton Station in Folsom with Betty January while Mary Kay followed in her car to retrieve them.
  • Linda, Betty T. and Nancy had trouble finding the location and ended up touring the countryside seeing new places and having lunch in Plymouth.

After getting home and changing clothes, I sure know how weeds spread so easily and quickly across the country – on the hems of petticoats!!!

Wednesday, August 17th – Attended monthly meeting of the Roses and the Rose Court. Many of us enjoyed lunch at the Hoosegow afterwards.

Tuesday, August 23rd – Judy and I were escorted by Mike to the El Dorado County Chamber Mixer & BBQ at Ponte Palmero. Dorothy Franklin outdid herself preparing another delicious meal. For those of you who remember our Home and Farm Advisors, Betty Hewitt and Barry Leeson, Barry has moved back down from WA State and is now living at Ponte Palmero where Betty is enjoying a very active life.

Wednesday, August 24th – Judy, Sandy and I, along with escorts Mike and Harry, were guests of the Clarksville Region Historical Society. We watched a power point presentation of the historical Skagit’s arrival with passengers in downtown Latrobe on August 6th. Betty January, El Dorado Rose 2007 introduced Judy, Sandy and me and asked if we would give a brief description of our costumes. Both Judy and I were anything but brief and the audience seemed to enjoy it and had many questions. Judy’s Civil War era costume was a little warm and it certainly made her thankful she could strip down to her tank-top and shorts (out in the parking lot) so she could return after the meeting was over and continue with the Rails discussion with a gentleman from the FEDSHRA.

Thursday, August 25th – Judy, Sandy and I attended the Grand Re-Opening & Ribbon Cutting of Robinson’s Medical Equipment and Supplies. There was only one County Chamber Ambassador to hold one end of the ribbon and I was asked to hold the other end as the proud owner Dennis Thomas did the cutting. The ceremony went very well and the BBQed pulled pork was another nice meal.
