The Reign of our Rose – July 2011

Posted By on August 1, 2011

Mary Ann Harper, El Dorado Rose – 2011, has agreed to share her reign with our Center. Each month, Mary Ann will offer us a look at what is happening as a result of her special status.

Monday, July 4th I was escorted by The El Dorado Thorn, Harry Harper, to Pollock Pines Fire Station 17 for their annual pancake breakfast.  After breakfast, we met up with Judy & Mike Muetz and all walked up Pony Express Trail to the Rose Float.  Carol & Roni were busy decorating.  Jackie Able and her daughter were also helping with decorations.  Soon, the float was very patriotically dressed in Red, White and Blue with a beautiful red lace awning over the top.  Past Roses, Golden Roses and Ladies of the Rose Court were seated and beautifully attired in Red, White and Blue.  As Jackie carefully pulled us along the parade route, we were greeted by a very enthusiastic crowd of warm wishers who were also dressed in their very best 4th of July clothing.

Riding on the float were:

  1. Judy Muetz
  2. Normadene Carpenter
  3. Carol Burnley
  4. Teddy Wolterbeek
  5. Roni Pettibone
  6. Kathy Walter
  7. Vivian Carpender
  8. Ethel Forsyth
  9. Mary Kay Brancheau
  10. Sandy Kowalski
  11. Mike Muetz
  12. Harry Harper
  13. Mary Ann Harper

Jackie pulled right up to the front door of the Pollock Pines / Camino Community Center where our reserved table awaited.  We were treated to the most wonderful rootbeer floats we had had in a long time prepared and served by our own Annabelle King and her helper Debbie Ringnes – both Angles of Mercy.

Sunday, July 10th I met Judy & Mike at their home where Mike very graciously took photos of me for the official portrait to hang in the County Fair Office.

Wednesday, July 13th The most beautiful bouquet of colorful Roses were on hand at the ribbon cutting ceremony for Cielo Estate Vineyard / Winery this evening.  Cielo was honored and welcomed as members of four Chamber of Commerces – Shingle Springs / Cameron Park Chamber, El Dorado Hills Chamber, Folsom Chamber and El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce.  It was a wonderful turnout of members from all Chambers.  The weather was perfect, the snacks were delicious and the wine was superb!  Those representing the Rose Court were;

  1. Carole Burnley
  2. Ethel Forsythe
  3. Sandy Kowalski
  4. Mary Kay Brancheau
  5. Teddy Wolterbeek
  6. Ellen Yevdakimov
  7. Juanita Grimm

  14. Mary Ann Harper

Thursday, July 14th The opening ceremonies of the California State Fair found Judy and me seated among dignitaries outside the main entrance at Cal Expo on a beautiful, balmy day.  Mayor Johnson led the audience in a toast to a successful 2011 State Fair with a corn dog that had been passed out and we were all holding in our hands.  Also in the audience was a large delegation from Sacramento’s sister city in Japan, all dressed in black and pink silk jackets.  Bella Vista H.S marching band played several tunes and the entire event was quite nice.  After the ceremony, Judy and I were escorted to the county building by Mike and Harry.  El Dorado County’s booth looks good this year and represents many things to entice visitors to our county along with brochures and pamphlet hand outs.  It was heartwarming having so many foreigners stop & ask if they could have their pictures taken with us.  They are fascinated by our clothing & I suppose they anticipate John Wayne will soon be riding up on his horse to join us.

Saturday, July 16th The Rose Court were all invited to attend the 150 year Sesquicentennial Celebration of the Placerville Episcopal Church of Our Savior.  We were there from 11am to 3pm participating in a historical tour of the church led by Pastoral Partners, Lee & Tom Weikert.  We learned so much history of the church including the fact this is the oldest continuously used worship building in El Dorado County.  The building is 146 years old and the 4 years of worship in the county Court House while the church was being built totals the 150 years of celebration.  We were amazed by the beauty of the 14 Stations of the Cross, which had been painted by our 2011 Golden Rose, Anne Gladwill.  These paintings, which took her 14 years to paint while she worked full time at the Sacramento Bee, are hanging along both sides of the church above the pews.  Anne painted one Station each year during Lent.  We enjoyed a Power Point showing of current & past photos of church activities & events, wonderful music by a 3 person combo on the patio and refreshments in the Parish Hall.  I was allowed private little tours by Judy of hidden tunnels and steep twisting stairways that lead to the Bell Fry.

Saturday, July 23 –       Judy & Mike met me at the Shingle Springs Community Center.  We were invited to participate in the Community Center’s 60th Anniversary Celebration.  The Shingle Springs Jubilee.  There was a shingle splitting contest of which I entered the Women’s Division and won with the most shingles of the same consistent size.  The event ran from 10am – 5pm.

Tuesday, July 26 – Judy and I participated in the Ribbon Cutting ceremony at Shingle Springs Flower Shop in Burke Junction.  Followed by a western themed Chamber Mixer which included custom, rod and classic cars, art galleries, food, music and 50/50 raffle to benefit Snowline Hospice.  Mike escorted Judy in his 1932 four door Model A passenger classic where it sat right in the middle of the car show.

Thursday, July 28 – Judy, Normadene and I attended the Chamber of Commerce Mixer @ Ponte Palmero Retirement Community in Cameron Park.

What beautiful facilities!  Many dignitaries were present and Judy and I were asked to draw the winning tickets for the many raffle items.  We had a lovely pork, rice and salad dinner with all the trimmings.  The theme for this mixer was Hawaiian (which we didn’t know about) and Judy happened to show up in one of her many outfits that she had reconditioned from a beautiful blue Hawaiian dress.  Another fun time!
