The Reign of our Rose, June 2011

Posted By on July 1, 2011

Mary Ann Harper, El Dorado Rose – 2011, has agreed to share her reign with our Center.  Each month, Mary Ann will offer us a look at what is happening as a result of her special status.

Thursday, June 16 –        Met Normadene & Judy at the county library where we boarded George Osborne’s 1915 vintage Model-T convertible and rode together to the little theatre.  We waved to the crowd as if we were all Princess Kate.  We strolled together into the Little Theater where we learned all about 4 fascinating women of the west; Charley Parkhurst, Lucy Wakefield, Nancy Gooch and Martha Roberds, we heard “Vibrance” sing .  Anne Gladwill received the Golden Rose sash for 2011 from Golden Rose – 2010, Vivian Carpender.  And, I was honored with the top award for the Mature Woman in El Dorado County!  I also, received a trophy for the Best Reproduction of costume along with the trophy for El Dorado Rose – 2011, a beautiful gold rose necklace, and a bouquet of the longest stemmed red roses I had ever seen.

Saturday, June 18 Met Ladies of the court, Normadene Carpenter and Judy Muetz @ 5pm @ the bus stop at the county library and rode the transit bus to the main gate.  We toured a lot of the grounds and exhibits visiting with people and stopping to have our pictures taken with children who were fascinated by our clothing.

Sunday, June 19 Met the ladies of the court @ the main gate.  I was escorted by Harry Harper – El Dorado Thorn – 2011.  The four of us then took the long way to the Grand Stands for the Studebaker Wheelbarrow Races.  We joined the Miss El Dorado contestants for 2011 and shared the duties of congratulating the winners and presenting certificates, trophies and checks.

Thursday, June 23 Met Judy Muetz and her husband, Escort Mike Muetz at Applebee’s, Cameron Park @ 5:30pm for a Shingle Springs / Cameron Park Mixer of business people.  I was asked to report a little something about the Rose Program.  Judy and I mingled among the members and guests and left around 7:00pm.

Saturday, June 25 Invited by El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce to attend Cowboys & Cornbread festival @ Rainbow Orchards sponsored by the El Dorado Co Visitors Authority & El Dorado Co Chamber of Commerce.

Judy Muetz and I both attended, arriving in Judy’s cream & black 1931 Model-A pick-up truck.  We were introduced by Jody Franklin, gave a brief synopsis of the El Dorado Rose program and then began collecting bail money from the crowd to get John Doe out of jail.  (Alias Jack Sweeney).  There was one gentleman who paid handsomely to keep him in the hoosegow.  We were able to collect over $75 (quarters, pennies, gum – whatever the angry crowd could dig deep to find in their pockets).  The Chili contest was fabulous, The Hangtown Harmonica Championship was impressive, the Cowboy Poetry was charming and we fit right in with the Classic Car Show.  Judy parked next to George Osbourne’s 1915 Model-T.  All proceeds went to the Pollock Pines / Camino Rotary Club and El Dorado County Visitors Authority.

Sunday, June 26 Invited by Gail Hartwick to attend the Historical R.R. Celebration in El Dorado.  Judy and I met at the Hartwick House @ 9am visited with Gail Hartwick for a bit and then went up to the new R.R. Station which is on the hill by the Community Center and used to be the El Dorado Elementary School.  The station sits next to the track and is a wonderful replica of the original building.  We bought our tickets and boarded the bright yellow 1932 Skagit for our ride to Greenstone Road.  As we approached little county roads, the train conductor would blow the whistle, Ed Cunha and another train engineer would get off with STOP signs and red flags, stopping traffic from both sides until we safely crossed the road and then the conductor would blow the whistle again as we headed down the tracks.  We knew we were to report to the Hartwick House by noon for the ice cream social and we also wanted to stroll up and down Main Street visiting with vendors and people we knew, so we headed back down town.  There was a classic car show where Judy knew many of the people.

Tuesday, June 28 Invited by El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce to attend the Mixer held this month at the Mountain Democrat in celebration of the newspaper’s 160th year.  Stopped by the Shingle Springs Community Center to leave the perpetual trophy with the SSCC name on the plaque.  They were having a SSCC Jubilee committee meeting prior to their regular board mtg.  Dan MacPherson, President, announced they are installing a permanent trophy

case to protect and house their trophy for the year along with my permanent trophy.  I then headed for Placerville and the Mt Democrat.  My long skirt acted as a wick as I crossed the parking lot in the rain.  It rained long and hard on this day of June 28, 2011.  I met with Judy Muetz, Normadene Carpenter and Sandi Kowalski.  We were greeted at the door by Mimi Escobar who asked if we could be the official greeters at the door.  We did for a bit and then began to mingle with a very large crowd.  It was very exciting seeing many old friends and becoming re
