The Reign of the Rose – January 2012

Posted By on February 1, 2012

Mary Ann Harper, El Dorado Rose – 2011, has agreed to share her reign with our Center. Each month, Mary Ann will offer us a look at what is happening as a result of her special status.

Friday, January 13th We attended the ribbon cutting ceremony in Placerville of the new “Placerville Coffee Depot” on Main Street across from KFC.  The building is a small replica of the R.R. Depot that used to sit where KFC is now.  It was moved in 1955.

Wednesday, January 18th: I attended the monthly meeting of the El Dorado Rose Program, which is held at the County Fair Board Room.

Saturday, January 21st : I attended the memorial service for the 1988 El Dorado Rose, Shirley Ellen Smith.  The Rose President, Carol Burnley, read a powerful and meaningful poem as ladies from the court each placed a long-stemmed red rose into a vase by Shirley’s picture.  It was a lovely memorial for a very lovely and special lady.

Saturday, January 21st: 2011 El Dorado Thorn, Harry Harper, and I were asked to welcome guests at the Shingle Springs Community Center spaghetti feed.  We were delighted to play host and hostess along with President, Dan MacPherson.  The crowd who attended, from far and near, was amazing!  They were all so very patient when, for a short time, the kitchen ran out of cooked pasta.  This feed was in celebration of the SSCC grand re-opening after being closed for repairs for several months.  After the meal was served and everyone was quite satisfied, the crowd began to dance to the wonderful music of “The Pickups”. Hopefully money was made to help defray the loss of revenue while the center was closed.

What a grand evening!!!!

Tuesday, January 24th We attended El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce first mixer of 2012 held at the Gold Country Retirement Center from 5:30-7:30.  The Center is located at 6041 Golden Center Court, Placerville.  They have lovely facilities and we met some charming residents.
